Advice about downloading video usually assumes bandwidth is free and unlimited. For a great many people it is neither. When a connection is slow, metered, or shared with a household, choosing a quality becomes a real decision rather than a reflex reach for the largest number.

What a minute of video actually costs

These figures vary with content, but they are a reasonable planning guide for one minute of ordinary video:

  • 360p costs roughly 5 to 10 MB per minute.
  • 480p costs roughly 10 to 20 MB per minute.
  • 720p costs roughly 20 to 45 MB per minute.
  • 1080p costs roughly 45 to 90 MB per minute.
  • 4K costs several hundred megabytes per minute.

A ten-minute clip at 1080p can therefore cost most of a gigabyte, while the same clip at 480p costs perhaps a tenth of that. On a capped plan the difference between those two choices, repeated across a month, is substantial.

Match the quality to the screen, not to the number

Resolution beyond what the display can show is spent for nothing. A typical phone viewed at arm's length cannot resolve the difference between 720p and 1080p on most content. On a laptop the difference becomes visible on detailed footage but is still modest. It is on a television, where the image is large and the viewing distance short relative to its size, that higher resolutions genuinely pay for themselves.

The honest rule is simple: 480p for a phone when data is tight, 720p for a phone or laptop when it is not, 1080p and above when the video will be shown on something large.

Content matters as much as resolution

A recorded lecture, an interview, a screen recording of slides: these are visually static and compress extremely well. They stay perfectly legible at 480p and cost very little. Sport, music video, drone footage and anything with fast motion or fine texture needs far more data to avoid visible blocking, and suffers noticeably at low resolutions.

So the same 480p choice can be excellent for one video and poor for another. Judge by what is in the frame, not by the label.

Practical habits that help

  • Download once at a sensible quality rather than starting over at a higher one after the fact.
  • Queue large downloads for off-peak hours if your connection is shared or shaped.
  • Keep the file you saved, because re-downloading the same video costs the data twice.
  • For audio-led content such as talks, podcasts and music, consider whether you need the picture at all.

When a download stalls

An interrupted download on a weak connection usually leaves a partial file that will not play. Rather than repeatedly retrying the same large file, drop to a smaller resolution. The shorter transfer is far more likely to complete without a break, and a finished 480p file is worth considerably more than a broken 1080p one.
